Man Arrested After Cannabis Packages Intercepted in St Austell
Police in St Austell have made an arrest after foreign-posted cannabis packages with a high street value were intercepted before delivery.
What happened
On Thursday 15th January, the neighbourhood team from St Austell Police attended an address in St Austell following information from Border Force.
Border Force had intercepted cannabis packages sent from abroad that were bound for the address. Police said the packages had a street value running into tens of thousands of pounds.
During searches at the property, officers located a significant amount of cannabis.
Arrest and further action
One occupant was arrested on suspicion of the importation of controlled drugs and being in possession of a prohibited offensive weapon. He was later bailed while further enquiries continue.
Other occupants at the address were dealt with locally for cannabis possession.
Police response to criticism
In the statement, police also addressed criticism sometimes aimed at enforcement involving what are often described as “soft” drugs.
They said cannabis production and supply is a source of funding for organised crime groups, which are involved in modern slavery and human trafficking.
The statement added:
“In anticipation for the comments from our social media critics we also take action against those possessing and supplying class A drugs 👍”
Enquiries into the incident are ongoing.
