Man Charged in Connection With Alleged Sexual Assault in Launceston

A man has been charged following an alleged sexual assault in Launceston.

Yordan Stanchev, 26, a Bulgarian national of no fixed abode in Launceston, has been charged with sexual assault on a female. He has been remanded in custody and is due to appear at Truro Magistrates’ Court today, Tuesday 27th January.

What police say happened

Officers were called at around 9.20pm on Sunday 25th January following a report that a 17 year old girl had been sexually assaulted by an unknown male in an alleyway by Launceston College.

Patrol units and the force helicopter were deployed as part of the response.

Police presence remains

There has been an increased police presence in the area since the report. Officers have thanked members of the public for their patience and assistance during the investigation.
