Carlyon Bay golf day with a tartan twist raises £3,000 for hospice
A tartan car at the first tee. Ninety-six golfers. Clear skies over the bay. By the end of it, Cornwall Hospice was £3,000 better off.
Hawkins Motor Group hosted its annual Charity Golf Day at Carlyon Bay Golf Club on Friday 2 October, welcoming customers, local businesses and friends for a day of friendly competition. Every swing was in aid of Cornwall Hospice, the local charity that cares for people living with life-limiting illnesses and supports their families.

Sunshine and sea views at Carlyon Bay
The weather played its part. Players enjoyed glorious sunshine, with the coastal setting of Carlyon Bay Golf Club as the backdrop to a day on the fairways.
John Hawkins, of the family-owned Cornish motor group, said: “We were incredibly fortunate with the weather, Carlyon Bay Golf Club was looking fantastic, and there was a brilliant atmosphere throughout the day. I particularly enjoyed catching up with players at our halfway house.”
A tartan Kia EV6 at the first tee
There was a distinctly Cornish touch, too. Hawkins Motor Group’s Cornish tartan Kia EV6, which has become a familiar sight on the county’s roads, took pride of place at the first tee.
It also featured in the raffle. One lucky winner has secured the chance to enjoy the car for a weekend this autumn.
Between the golf and the raffle, the day raised £3,000 for the hospice.
Why every pound counts for Cornwall Hospice
Cornwall Hospice provides specialist care and support for people living with life-limiting illnesses, as well as their families and loved ones. Its annual running costs are almost £8 million, and 91% of its funding comes from charitable support.
John said: “We’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who joined us for our Charity Golf Day and helped raise such a fantastic amount for Cornwall Hospice.
“As a family business with deep roots in Cornwall, supporting our local communities is incredibly important to us. Raising £3,000 through the golf day and raffle is a fantastic result, and we’re delighted to be able to support the invaluable work Cornwall Hospice does for people and families across the county.”
Amanda Taylor, Relationships Partner at Cornwall Hospice, said: “I’d like to say a heartfelt thank you to Hawkins and Carlyon Bay Golf Club for their incredible generosity in hosting this special fundraising event in support of Cornwall Hospice.
“The weather was fantastic, the number of golfers supporting was incredible, the raffle was ginormous, and it was evident that a lot of hard work and commitment went into making this event the success that it was.
“Fundraising events like these have such a huge impact on the care we are able to provide to our patients and their loved ones at such a difficult time. So from everyone at Cornwall Hospice, thank you for supporting our hospices making every moment matter.”

Cheque presentation and thanks
The total was marked with a cheque presentation, bringing together representatives from Hawkins Motor Group, Cornwall Hospice and the golf club.
Maggie Holmes, Club President at Carlyon Bay Golf Club, said: “Thank you so much to Hawkins Motor Group who sponsored a very special day for Mount Edgcumbe Hospice. The whole of Cornwall was well represented with members from clubs throughout the county.
“Thanks also to the Brend Collection for the use of the course, the staff who worked tirelessly throughout the day and finally to those who donated raffle prizes!”
Hawkins Motor Group, which has served communities across Cornwall since 1933, also thanked the Brend Collection’s Carlyon Bay Golf Club, particularly Maggie and Secretary Jon Wilson, along with the players, raffle supporters and everyone who helped make the day a success.
The golf day winners
Taking the honours on the day were Mike Drew, Scott Richards, Kilian Feely and Martin Nicholas.
