Porthleven Town Council objects to harbour car park charges plan

A pay machine earmarked for Porthleven’s harbourside car park has run into official opposition before it has even reached a decision.

What’s being proposed

The application, PA26/05941, seeks permission to install a pay-and-display parking machine and associated signage on Commercial Road at Porthleven Harbour. It would bring charges to a stretch of parking that currently has none.

The council’s objection

Porthleven Town Council formally objected to the application during its meeting on Thursday. The objection goes well beyond the principle of charging for parking. Councillors raised questions over the legal status of Commercial Road itself, and said the application does not give enough detail on how the signage and enforcement would actually work.

Other concerns cited include the potential impact on the Porthleven Conservation Area and its heritage assets, highway and pedestrian safety around the harbour, the knock-on effect for local businesses, and the risk that drivers priced off Commercial Road simply move their cars into the surrounding residential streets instead.

What happens next

The Town Council’s position is that these issues need to be properly worked through and assessed before any decision is made on the application. Cornwall Council is the authority that will ultimately decide PA26/05941.

Commercial Road runs along the working side of the harbour, a stretch of Porthleven that fills with cars, boats gear and passing foot traffic through the summer season. Whether pay-and-display arrives there, and on what terms, is now a question for the planners.
